The melody as sung today comes from the collection Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck (1626) by Adriaen Valerius. The melody of the Wilhelmus originated during the siege of the French city of Chartres in 1568. Only the first verse is usually sung, sometimes followed by the sixth verse: ‘My shield and reliance’.
